WHAT IS A SMEAR TEST?
A smear test (cervical screening - pap test) is the diagnostic test that identifies any cellular abnormalities in the cervix.
As a rule, unless otherwise indicated, a smear test should be performed every three years between the ages of 25 and 64.
If the smear test detects any altered cells, it is then necessary to carry out further checks to confirm or not the presence of these alterations, to identify with certainty the type of alteration, and to identify the most appropriate therapy.
The gynaecological examination
HOW IS THE SMEAR TEST PERFORMED?
The smear test is carried out in an outpatient clinic with a vaginal sampling that collects cells from the cervix.
The cells are then 'smudged' on a slide and examined under a microscope (cytological examination).
HOW SHOULD ONE PREPARE FOR THE EXAM?
For best results, it is necessary to wait 3-4 days after the menstrual cycle and suspend sexual intercourse and any medication at least 3 days before the examination.
